CNG Conversion Cost Nigeria 2026: Is It Worth It Now?

President Bola Tinubu has brought Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) back to the center of Nigeria’s transport conversation. After meeting state governors in August, he set an October 1 target for cheaper inter-state fares, and on September 19 he again urged governors to increase CNG infrastructure and fleet. If you drive a petrol car, a tricycle or a commercial bus, the practical question is simple: what? CNG conversion cost in Nigeria Today, and it still pays off?

which the Federal Government has announced

According to statements reported by Legit.ng and Techeconomy, Tinubu told governors on August 27, 2026 that a CNG vehicle “consumes 60 to 80 percent less fuel than running on petrol.” A joint federal-state committee is meant to implement the fare reduction, which aims to start on October 1. Since transportation regulation is largely a state matter, actual fare reductions vary from state to state.

Title numbers claimed by the Presidency include:

  • Over 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG since 2023, across over 400 certified conversion centres.
  • The number of over 90 CNG refueling stations is said to be increasing.
  • More than 100,000 additional conversion kits are being installed through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PICNG).
  • Guidance for 500 more refueling stations on top of the 500 previously ordered for a planned total of 1,000.

These are government claims, not independently audited figures. Commentators such as Sam Amadi have argued that the real test is whether ordinary Nigerians feel the impact, not how many conversions count.

The rent reduction has already been announced

The President cited examples from several states. In Abuja, a partnership with transport union NURTW reduced fares by 40% on some routes, such as Area 1 to Gwagwalada from ₦1,500 to ₦900, and Nyanya from ₦700 to ₦420. Niger State reported Abuja to Suleza at ₦550 from about ₦800 earlier. Malabhumi said the government-supported buses carry about 13,000 passengers daily at ₦200 per trip. Edo has 50 CNG buses running, Kano said over 1,000 commercial vehicles have been converted, and Akwa Ibom has supplied 50 CNG buses.

How much does CNG conversion cost in Nigeria?

Here’s the caveat: the most detailed cost figures I can verify are from a Guardian Nigeria report published in September 2025, so consider them a guide and not a current quote.

  • Standard four-cylinder car: about ₦1.2 million (image in article).
  • Six-cylinder cars: up to about ₦1.6 million.
  • Kit manufacturer estimate: ₦700,000 to ₦1.5 million depending on kit type and number of cylinders.
  • An oil and gas analyst quoted ₦1 million to ₦1.5 million.

Prices at the workshop have probably moved since then with exchange rates and kit supplies. Ask for a written, itemized quote covering the kit, cylinder, installation, testing and warranty. Also ask if your center is part of a certified network, as the same report has flagged unlicensed or poorly trained workshops as safety concerns.

Is conversion ever free?

Government programs call for free or subsidized conversions, especially for commercial operators and tricycles, and PiCNG says eligible users include private motorists, commercial operators and tricycle drivers. 2025 The Guardian reports that there is no government funding for ordinary personal conversions. Check with PiCNG or your state’s program for current eligibility rather than assuming it’s free.

CNG Pump Price: The Number That Determines Everything

Savings are based on price per standard cubic meter (SCM). The same report for 2025 stated that pump prices for cars and commercial vehicles increased from about ₦230 to ₦380 per SCM in early September 2025, with trucks paying up to ₦450. Some drivers said that after the increase, the running cost is close to that of petrol. The government said those were private sector pricing decisions. I couldn’t verify the exact price today, so check the board at your local station before committing your money.

A fast break-even method

  1. Work out your monthly petrol cost (litres x current pump price).
  2. Estimate the same distance on CNG using the per-scm price at your station and a general cost figure from your installer.
  3. Subtract that to get the monthly savings.
  4. Divide your conversion quote by that monthly savings to get the payback time per month.

A kit maker quoted in 2025 claimed payback in three to four months, but only with reliable gas supply. High-mileage users such as e-hailing drivers, bus operators and delivery fleets benefit the most. If you drive 200 km a week, the payback is greatly expanded.

Where CNG means, and where not

PICNG has named priority corridors including Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, Lokoja and Maiduguri, with Lagos and Owerri also receiving commissioned stations in May. The Abuja facility is said to serve about 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses a day. Outside of these areas, availability is thin. The 2025 report said all five southeastern states and several northern states lacked a functioning filling station at the time, and drivers described long queues and stations running dry.

Weigh the imperfections honestly

  • Boot Space: Cylinders take up luggage room, especially in saloons and hatchbacks.
  • Station Coverage: A dual-fuel system allows you to switch back to petrol, but you still need to plan long trips.
  • Security and Technology: Use only certified centers and check cylinders. Please check for any written warranties.
  • Strength: Some engines feel a little less lively on gas.
  • Price Risk: If gas prices continue to rise, your savings will shrink.

take root

A CNG conversion may make sense if you drive a lot, live near a reliable station and use a certified installer. Get a written quote, check today’s per-SCM price, and calculate your own payback before paying. President figures claim 60-80% government savings; Your actual results depend on gas prices and supply.

FAQ

Can I run petrol after conversion?

Most conversions are bi-fuel, so the car can run on either petrol or CNG. Confirm this with your installer.

Will the rent really decrease from October 1?

Targets are set, but it is a federal-state plan and each state decides. So far reported in Abuja, Niger, Plateau and several other states.

Does conversion affect car insurance?

Tell your insurer about the change; Some policies need to be declared. Ask for it in writing.

Disclaimer: Car prices, import duties, conversion costs, gas prices and specs change frequently in Nigeria. Always confirm current figures with the dealer, installer or official source before purchasing or converting.
