“No matter what you buy, you can’t finish a billion dollars in this life” — Seun Kuti

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti sparked conversations online after stating that it is nearly impossible for an individual to spend a billion dollars in a lifetime, despite their extravagant lifestyle and lavish spending.
Seun Kuti says you can’t spend a billion dollars
Speaking during a recent debate on wealth and consumer culture, the singer claimed that the human brain was never designed to fully comprehend the scale of billion-dollar wealth.
According to him, people often underestimate the difference between millions and billions because of the large numbers.
“You can’t finish one billion dollars in this life. I go to buy something and they say this is worth 13 billion naira, 12 billion naira,“, said Seun Kuti.
“The human brain did not evolve to calculate huge numbers. One million seconds is 11 days, one billion seconds is 11,000 days, which is 37 years. If you have one billion dollars, if you want to buy private jets, whatever you buy, the money will not run out“, he added.
The comments revive discussions about wealth inequality
The comments have since sparked new debates on social media about the concentration of wealth, luxury spending and economic inequality, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria where millions continue to struggle with inflation and the rising cost of living.
Seun Kuti has previously criticized capitalism and the excessive accumulation of wealth.
In 2024, the singer also questioned why a small percentage of the world’s population controls a large share of global resources while poverty continues to grow across Africa and other regions.
