Confused about your skincare order? Here is the right way

One of the most confusing things about skincare isn’t even the products themselves, it’s figuring out what goes first. Should the serum come before the moisturizer? Where does sunscreen fit in? And do you really need all ten steps that influencers swear by?

The truth is that a good skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. The general rule is simple: apply products from the lightest consistency to the thickest. This helps your skin absorb each product properly without heavier formulas blocking more easily.

Here is the correct order of a basic skin care routine:

Cleanser
Always start with a clean face. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, sweat and makeup so your other products can really work.

Toner (optional)
Toners can help hydrate the skin or address problems such as acne and excess oil, but they are not required.

Serum
This is where treatment products go. Vitamin C serums are usually applied in the morning to brighten and protect, while hydrating or acne-fighting serums can be used depending on your skin concerns.

Moisturizer
The moisturizing cream retains hydration and strengthens the barrier of your skin. Even oily skin needs it.

Sunscreen (morning only)
This is the most important step in skin care. Sunscreen protects your skin from sun damage, hyperpigmentation and premature aging. It should always be the last step of your morning routine.

At night, your routine may look a little different: cleanser, care products (like retinol), moisturizer. The biggest mistake people make is using too many products at once. More products do not always mean better skin. Consistency is more important than a cluttered shelf.

A simple routine you stick to will always beat an expensive routine you abandon after three days.
