Tottenham are promising a major rebuild after surviving a relegation scare

Tottenham Hotspur they confirmed a major financial and structural reset after narrowly avoiding it Premier League relegation in consecutive seasons, and the club management admits that the situation is far below expectations.

The north London side survived the final day after beating Everton, but their league struggles sparked an internal review and a strongly worded statement from the club’s ownership group.

Ownership admits failure and demands change

The Lewis family, who control the club, posted an unusually blunt message on the club’s official platform, which read: “Finishing 17th this season and last season does not reflect the status or potential of this football club.”

They added: “We are bitterly disappointed and share your frustration. You and we expect more from this. We know this must never happen again.”

The statement also reaffirmed a commitment to long-term investment, insisting: “This will require investment – in our teams, academy, our back-end functions and more – and we are fully committed to that.”

Club boss Vinai Venkatesham reinforced the direction of travel, confirming that Tottenham have effectively abandoned their previous wage structure to remain competitive in recruitment.

He told the BBC: “The team needs to work and the team doesn’t have the right balance.”

He added: “We need experience and leadership… especially this transfer window will be critical.”

Structural overhaul targets performance deficiencies

Tottenham management have identified squad imbalance, injuries and inefficient infrastructure as key drivers of the decline, with internal changes already underway in the medical and performance departments.

Venkatesham acknowledged the scale of the challenge, saying, “It’s hard to underestimate the scale of the challenge he’s stepped into.”

He also admitted that the club’s training environment needed reconfiguration, adding: “It looks more like a five-star hotel than a performance environment.”

A review of the club’s £1billion stadium pitch system has also been launched amid concerns it could be contributing to recurring injury problems.

De zerbi influence and attempt to recover the team

Despite the instability earlier in the season, the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi brought short-lived stabilisation, with the team picking up 11 points from seven games to retain their top flight status.

Injuries to key players such as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have further exposed depth issues in the squad, intensifying calls for reform in recruitment and medical operations.

Venkatesham concluded that the club is still in transition, saying: “We’re fixing them. We’re solving them. Those challenges didn’t go away overnight.”
