“I prayed that my daughter would not follow in my footsteps,” complains the single mother
Single mother sparked emotional reactions on social media after she spoke about the pain of watching her daughter also become a single mother despite years of giving up and fighting to give her children a better life.
A woman shared her frustrations during an online discussion about parenting, broken homes and generational struggles.
According to her, she worked menial jobs for years and raised the children alone after their father allegedly did not take responsibility for them.
She explained that she was most afraid of seeing her daughter to repeat the same cycle she experienced.
“No one talks about the pain of being a single mother, and all you have envisioned for your children is a better life. Don’t pray for your children to follow in your footsteps. You still see them getting pregnant by stupid, senseless, wayward men, which is what you prayed against. You struggle all your life to feed those children because of their father’s waywardness, and that child ends up being another single mother in your own house,” she added emotionally.
The debate revives concerns about family struggles
The emotional narrative has since sparked widespread debate online, particularly among users in Nigeria who have discussed the challenges of parenting, poverty and absentee fathers.
In recent years, conversations about single parenthood and economic hardship have become more common on social media, with many parents sharing personal stories of raising children alone amid the rising cost of living.
In 2024, several advocacy groups also called for stronger support systems for single mothers struggling with childcare and financial obligations.
Many users sympathized with the woman’s situation, while others emphasized the importance of guidance, education and emotional support in helping young people make better life decisions.
