“I signed it by mistake” – Desmond Elliot admits he signed the Obasa impeachment notice

  • Desmond Elliot has admitted he “mistakenly” signed Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment notice, claiming he assumed it came from the presidency.
  • His revelation sparked a backlash online, with many Nigerians questioning his political influence, democracy and his judgment as a lawmaker.

Popular Nollywood actor and Lagos MP, Desmond Elliot, has reacted to revelations surrounding the controversial impeachment bid against former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Elliot admitted that he signed the impeachment notice against Obasa “by mistake”, explaining that he assumed the move had been approved by the presidency.

The lawyer revealed that he had just returned from South Africa, where he had attended a wedding, and was still disoriented when presented with the document.

According to reports, the impeachment saga took place during a leadership crisis in January 2025 within the Lagos State House of Assembly, where Obasa was briefly removed over allegations of misconduct before eventually returning after an intervention allegedly linked to President Bola Tinubu.

Reacting to recent comments by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Elliot expressed surprise after learning that his political position is said to be almost hit by the crisis.

“It was a shock,” Elliot said in response to the controversy.

His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians criticizing his explanation and questioning the level of political influence the presidency allegedly wields in Lagos politics.

Reacting to X, @Mujaahid_1 wrote:

“You come on national TV to say you think the impeachment of the head of state comes from the president? lol. where are you driving?”

Another user, @bright_iteshi, questioned Elliot’s judgement:

“Well, because it’s a document from the Presidency, you just sign it even though you don’t understand it and you don’t agree with it. Don’t you have any brains???”

A user identified as @Donniembaeyi also reacted:

“So this is politics and democracy, the presidency and giving directives to impeach someone and you do it without hesitation.”

Others argued that the incident further exposed how political decisions in Lagos State are allegedly controlled by powerful people behind the scenes.

“When they want to deceive you, they will say there is a GAC that controls Lagos. However, it is obvious that the entire political architecture of Lagos is controlled by Tinubu,” @nadoches commented.
