“Omugwo is for doing business, not for rest” – Lady sparks a debate about mother-in-law’s expectations after childbirth

Nigerian lady has sparked online conversations after sharing her thoughts on Omugwo and expectations involving mothers-in-law after childbirth.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she questioned the growing expectation that the husband’s mother should automatically pick up Omugwo without considering the demands of caring for the newborn.
She said in her own words:
“Which husband should come to do omugwo? I hope you won’t object if I order your mother around?”
The lady went on to ask if husbands would be comfortable with their mothers doing household chores like laundry or cooking the dishes preferred by the new mother.
She added that as a nursing mother, she cannot be expected to cook and take care of a visiting mother-in-law, insisting that every mother who comes to Omugwo should be ready to actively help in the house.
“You can’t expect me to just watch your mother sit and do nothing like a nursing mother. If your mom is going to be the one to come get our Omugwo, just know that I will send her on errands,” she said.
Her statement has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians debating family roles, Omugwo tradition and boundaries in marriage.
The conversation continues online as social media users share their opinions on motherhood, expectations in marriage and family support after childbirth.
