“Where do I want to see my husband from?” — Bovi questions parents about dating culture

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has sparked conversations online after criticizing how many parents discourage young people from dating but later expect them to easily agree to marriage.

The comedian questions the parental approach to relationships

Speaking during a recent discussion on relationships and societal expectations, Bovi asserted that many Nigerian parents criminalize harmless relationship experiences as children grow up.

According to him, young people are often prevented from expressing their emotions, writing love letters, or going on harmless dates with people they like.

Most parents don’t want to hear that your pikin got a boyfriend, but when they reach a certain age, you’ll be asking them to bring a husband. Why didn’t you bring your husband? Where do you want to see your husband from?” said Bovi.

You didn’t innocently go to the cinema to watch a movie with your child. You didn’t walk or walk or write letters because if they see the love letter from when we were in high school it will be like the whole world stopped,“, he added.

The comments encourage discussion about marriage and modern relationships

The comedian further claimed that society’s negative attitude towards dating could contribute to the relationship failures and rising divorce rates in Nigeria.

We are criminalizing the dating culture in Nigeria and now we are wondering why marriages are breaking up,” he stated.

In recent years, celebrities, relationship experts and social commentators have increasingly discussed the importance of emotional maturity and healthy experiences before marriage.

Similar conversations were also trending in 2024 after public figures criticized social pressure around relationships among young Nigerians.

Many social media users agreed with Bova’s comments, while others argued that strict parenting is necessary to protect children from harmful influences and distractions at an early age.
