If there’s one person who knows how to make hair do the impossible, it’s her Susan “Susy” Oludele. The famous hair artist, who literally gave us BeyoncéThe iconic “Lemonade” braids, just debuted a new look on an albino model that’s essentially a 3D sculpture made of hair.
Forget everything you know about traditional box braids. For this project, Susy used blue extensions to create an architectural look that looks like stacked geometric cubes. Braids are not just shaped; they are designed into a gravity-defying tower that stands like a crown. It’s a bold, futuristic take on African braids that proves why it’s a star favorite Solange, Zoë Kravitzand Megan Thee Stallion.
In order to keep the focus on the hair, the model’s beauty look is bare, but effective. A classic red matte lip provides a sharp pop of color against her skin, while chunky gold rectangular earrings and a heavy link chain add a touch of luxury to the combo.
Susy’s ability to perform these “visual stunts” comes from a deep-rooted history. Born in the Bronx to Nigerian parents, she started braiding at just nine years old after her mother told her she was too tired to do her hair anymore and would have to “figure it out” on her own. That “realization” led her from “YouTube University” to opening her own Hair by Susy salons in Brooklyn and LA. She went from being homeless and working at McDonald’s to becoming a global authority on black hair, even selling a series of “Albino Royalty” posters that celebrate that very blend of albinism and art.
