Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke popularly known as Davido has been involved in a heated online exchange with Instagram user, Emmanuel Oveze Benjamin who goes by the handle bhenjy_cfr.
The controversy started on May 19 after Davido made a post on his verified X account, where he heavily criticized the former governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola. In the post, the singer described Oyetola as a desperate and unpleasant politician, which caused mixed reactions on social media.
On May 20, Emmanuel Benjamin responded via an Instagram video, accusing David of only being interested in Nigerian politics when it comes to his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. He also questioned the governor’s performance in office, stating that he is more known for dancing than commissioning projects.
He further argued that David’s political involvement appeared to be selective, saying:
“Davido, why do you only seem to care about Nigeria when your uncle is hit? Fuel is 1,400 naira, you never talk. Your uncle has been governor for four years but I have not seen him commission a single project. Every time I see him, he is always dancing.”
The critic further claimed that Davido only speaks when it comes to his family’s political interests, insisting that such behavior is common in politics.
“Davido only becomes an activist when Governor Adeleka’s governorship is threatened,” he added.
Davido later responded in the comments section, defending his family and the administration in Osun State. He wrote:
“If it’s your turn, there’s no support for your family. . . . Other than that, we’re doing great work at OSUN . . .”
The Instagram user followed up with another video, where he criticized Davido’s response, describing him as immature and questioning his role as the chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund. He also challenged the singer to provide evidence of development projects carried out under his uncle’s leadership.
he said:
“Davido came to my comments section with the thinking ability of a 17-year-old kid and said, ‘If it’s your turn, don’t make me protect my family.’ I haven’t seen a single video of your uncle commissioning a single project. If Osun works for the Adeleke family, does it work for three million other citizens?”
He further compared Davido’s influence to that of Seyi Tinubu, suggesting that both belong to the same political elite, although he noted that public criticism of Seyi Tinubu tends to be harsher.
“There is no difference between you and Seyi Tinubu, but Nigerians hate Seyi Tinubu more. You are literally the same, you belong to the same group of elites.”
Davido responded again, advising the critic to visit Osun State before jumping to conclusions.
“Take off your camera and visit OSUN .. Thank you ..BSC holder btw 😊”
The exchange has since gone viral, sparking widespread reactions as fans continue to debate the clash between the music star and the social media commentator.
