AND man sparked widespread reactions on social media after declaring that he would never date a woman who was previously in a relationship with a suspected internet fraudster, popularly known in Nigeria as “Yahoo boy.”
A man shared his thoughts during an online discussion about dating standards, trust and financial impact in relationships.
His comments quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from users on different platforms. While some people supported his point of view, others criticized him for stereotyping women based on their past relationships.
“I can never date a girl who has dated a yahoo guy before. Many girls who previously dated a yahoo guy have no character or dignity. Such a girl is only attracted by money, she loves money and I cannot trust such a girl“, he added.
The debate revives concerns about the Internet’s culture of fraud
The statement has since reignited conversations about the impact of online scam culture on relationships and relationships social values among young Nigerians.
Over the years, the lavish lifestyles associated with suspected fraudsters have remained a major topic online, with critics claiming social media has glamorized get-rich-quick and materialism.
In 2024, several relationship discussions also trended after users debated whether financial status now plays a bigger role than character in modern dating.
While the man’s supporters argued that relationships built around money rarely last, others insisted that individuals should not be judged solely by who they dated in the past, stressing that personal growth and change are still possible.
