Oyo suspends school excursions, inter-school activities after recent kidnapping attack

The Oyo State Government has suspended all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions and other activities outside school premises across the state due to mounting security concerns.
The directive follows last week’s deadly coordinated kidnapping attack on schools in Oriira Local Government Area, where several students and teachers are reportedly still in captivity.
“In view of the recent security concerns, the Ministry is taking steps to protect the lives of students and staff members in all schools in Oyo State.”
In a circular dated May 22, 2026, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. BT Oyinloye, the government directed all school administrators to immediately suspend all activities that require students to move outside the school premises.
The government also said that all previous approvals for field trips and outside school activities have now been canceled pending an improvement in the security situation across the country.
“The safety of our children is non-negotiable and takes precedence over all academic and extracurricular activities. This directive is effective immediately and will be reviewed as soon as the security situation improves,” it is stated.
The directive has been circulated to education authorities, principals, principals and school administrators across Oyo State amid growing concern over the safety of students and teachers.
