“He should not have sought a second term” – Wike talks about Fubara’s withdrawal from the governorship race

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reacted to the withdrawal of Siminalayi Fubara from the governorship race.

Speaking on the development, Wike said he was not surprised by Fubara’s decision, arguing that an agreement had already been reached on the governor’s political future.

“I am not surprised that Governor Fubara has retired. First of all, he should not have taken the governorship form because an agreement was reached to drop the impeachment against him and he should also not be talking about a second term,” Wike said.

According to the former governor of Rivers State, part of the alleged deal was that Fubara would not run for a second term.

The statement further fueled political debates in Rivers State amid a protracted crisis involving key political stakeholders in the state.

Wike’s remarks come after Fubara announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in Rivers State, declaring his support for whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum across the country, observers say events unfolding in Rivers State could play a significant role in shaping future political alignments.
