“When did faith become a condition for a father to see his child?” — A lady shares a story about a custody dispute

AND woman sparked an online debate after sharing the story of a custody dispute involving her younger brother and his ex-partner, a member of the Jehovah’s Witness faith, following the birth of their child.
According to her, the couple was in a relationship that led to the pregnancy, and the man accepted responsibility and was ready to support both mother and child.
However, he claims that tensions began during the birth when the woman refused to reveal her hospital, which made it difficult for the father to be present at the birth.
“My younger brother was secretly dating a Jehovah’s Witness girl and along the way she got pregnant. My brother immediately accepted the responsibility. He was ready to take care of both her and the baby. But the shocking thing is that she refused to tell him which hospital she was admitted to when she went into labor. After the birth, she still refused to let him see his own child,” she said.
The situation is causing a religious and custody debate
The woman further said that the mother insisted that the father only have access to the child if he joined her church, a condition she strongly questioned while talking on the internet.
This situation has since started discussions about religion, co-parenting rights and access to children outside of marriage.
Legal experts have often noted that custody and visitation rights are usually determined by law rather than religious affiliation, a topic that gained attention in 2023 during several public family disputes reported across Nigeria.
“According to her, unless the service starts at her church, she will not have access to the baby. Now tell me, when faith became a condition for a father to see his child?” she stated.
