“Your color is not a curse”: Anok Yai winning fashion awards speaks volumes

Have you ever seen a moment that seemed completely fated to you? That was it Anok Yai last night at the Fashion Awards 2025, where she was named Model of the Year at London’s Royal Albert Hall — a victory many have been waiting for.

She entered wearing a custom Dilare Findikoglu gown that looked almost sculpted to her body: a champagne silk satin gown shaped into a dramatic mermaid silhouette, anchored by a sharp corset with exposed boning. The skirt gathered in asymmetrical pleats before falling into a cathedral train with textured edges.

Her styling was just as striking: a sleek, rough bob, defined eyes, glowing skin and chandelier earrings that framed her face without covering her dress.

When Anok took the stage to accept her award, she framed the moment with words that seemed bigger than fashion. During her speech she declared: “To all my little black girls looking at me right now, your color is not a curse.” She also reflected on the doubt she faced early in her career: “I was told my career would only last six months… it was a long six months, huh?”

It was a night of recognition, yes – but also a night that validated her journey, her voice and her place as one of the defining faces of this generation.
