“I just stood there staring at the smooth road like a mumu” — Man compares road repairs in Nigeria and Canada

AND man sparked conversations online after he told how he was forced to “to settle” guys before fixing a pothole in their street in Egbeda.

A resident shares a frustrating experience in Lagos

The man, whose post has since gone viral on social media, explained that he decided to repair the damaged section of road after being frustrated with the condition of the street, which he said was damaging vehicles and causing inconvenience to residents.

According to him, he personally bought the asphalt and hired workers to carry out the repair work, only to be stopped by local street gangs demanding payment before the work began.

Nobody sent me. The thing was eating tires and I was tired of it. I bought the asphalt, hired the workers and came back the next morning ready for work. The area guys stopped us before we even started. They said: ‘Oga, do you want to work for this street? You have to sort yourself out first.’ I did not repair the government building or run the electricity. I patched a pothole on a public road with my own money,” he added.

Comparison with the Canadian system provokes reactions

The man further compared the experience to a previous incident in Toronto, where he allegedly used the city’s 311 complaint system to report a pothole that was repaired within three days.

His comments provoked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians bemoaning poverty infrastructure management and street gang extortion.

In recent years, several residents across Lagos have taken it upon themselves to repair roads within their communities due to delays in government intervention, often documenting the process online to draw attention to worsening infrastructural challenges.
