“Fake Malaria Medicine Destroyed My Brother’s Kidney” — Family Protests Over Counterfeit Medicines

AND man raised the alarm about the growing threat of counterfeit medicines after his brother developed serious kidney complications following treatment for malaria.
According to a viral social media post shared with photos from the hospital ward, the victim is currently receiving intensive medical care after reacting to medication administered to treat malaria.
The post accuses manufacturers and distributors of fake drugs for endangering lives across the country.
The family raised the alarm about fake medicines
“This is my little brother. The anti-malaria medicine he was given led to kidney problems. May God punish every person involved in the production of fake drugs in Nigeria,” wrote a relative on the Internet.
The photos show the patient lying on a hospital bed while attached to medical equipment believed to be used for dialysis treatment.
The family did not reveal the name of the hospital, correct drugs involved or when the incident occurred.
“This is heartbreaking. No one takes malaria medication expecting to end up with kidney failure. We just want justice and stronger regulation so this doesn’t happen to another family,” the cousin added.
Growing concern over counterfeit medicines in Nigeria
Nigeria has repeatedly fought against the circulation of fake and low-quality medicines.
In previous years, the National Food and Drug Administration and Control Agency has warned that counterfeit drugs remain a major threat to public health, particularly in the treatment of malaria and other common diseases.
Health experts have continued to urge Nigerians to buy medicines only from authorized pharmacies and hospitals to reduce the risks associated with unproven drugs.
